  • House Fire

Thursday night, on the coldest night of the winter so far we had a house fire.

Praise God that no one was hurt. Praise God for the timing of it all. SIX minutes after I returned home from work I called 911 and Elyas and I left the house. That morning it was a bitter 6 degrees, Andrew made a fire in our wood-burning stove like we had done so many times before. Due to faulty construction, there was a 2×10 beam and spray foam insulation that was too close to our triple walled pipe, ultimately that is where the fire started which spread through our entire attic. We keep replaying what the Fire Chief and Captain said as we walked through the home, “It was only a matter of time before it happened.”

We did lose a lot of “stuff” but that’s not what matters. Even in the midst of a terrible and long night, we have reason to be thankful. We are so humbled by all the prayer we have received so far and everyone who has reached out to us. Please forgive us if we haven’t gotten back to you.

We are thankful for the Reynolds. Steven left a cart full of groceries and was at our house within 3 minutes. He stepped in until Andrew got home from work. They have opened up their home until we find temporary housing.

We are thankful for the East Anchorage and Eagle River Fire Department, who showed up quickly and worked tirelessly to put out the fire. We are so thankful for each and everyone one of you.

We are thankful for all our neighbors, they literally kept me warm when I left my house with only a light coat.

We are thankful for the leadership at our jobs. They have been so accommodating and supportive. Andrew’s immediate boss and the Chief of his squadron came that night. They have told Andrew to take as much time as he needs.

We are thankful for our family back in Ohio. In the chaos, I texted my older sister, Steph at 10 PM East Coast Time, “my house is on fire, please pray”. They stayed up all night praying and have continued praying.

We are thankful for our small group who has rallied around us. They have opened up their homes, provided meals, and prayed over us. They have taken our minds off our to-do lists with game nights and good conversations.

Lastly, I am thankful for Andrew, he has kept me laughing through this ordeal and has taken care of all the logistical details.

We are overwhelmed by the support we have received so far. We are grateful for each and every one of you who have asked what our needs are right now our only need is prayer, pray for this week as we figure out our next steps. Once we find housing for the next 6 months during the restoration process we will update if needs arise.

We continue to see God’s protection every day.

  • It has been a rough month with a lot of questions and tears. It’s also been a month of silence. It’s easier to numb myself with busyness and binge-watching than it is to open my Bible and cry out to the Lord. After all, human nature is not a natural inclination towards holiness. Even though I have made little to no effort towards my relationship with Christ, He never left me. Instead, in the very quick silent moments of my day, He revealed the underlining issue of my heart – bitterness.

It’s not bitterness towards other women who have received the precious gift of a child. It’s bitterness towards God. In not my proudest moment, I yelled to the Lord, “Why are you not blessing us!” Then I remembered the stories of Joseph and David and Tamar and Job and Abraham and Ruth and Mary and Paul. I fell into a trap from the enemy believing that my Savior owes me something. I serve a good Father who extends grace and mercy far beyond what we deserve. He owes me nothing. He already has given everything for me, He gave His life for me. God is just and faithful. While I continue fighting to fully surrender the plans I have for my life, I’m going to battle with bitterness.

The thing that really lifts my heart away from the deep pit of bitterness is thankfulness. So instead of pitching a fit with God, instead of sulking and numbing, instead of judging – I am resolving to get aggressively grateful for what God has done, is doing, and has promised to do in my life – right where I’m at.

This month is all about thankfulness, here’s your November reminder: Thankfulness is not weak and wimpy; it’s not nostalgic and polite. Thankfulness is intentional warfare against the idea that God is not enough for us. Thankfulness is worshipful warfare against the idea that we need more. So let’s be #aggressivelygrateful as we enter this week of thanks.

Thankfulness is the natural outflowing of a heart that is attuned to God. The Apostle Paul – a man who had learned the meaning of true thanksgiving, even in the midst of great adversity. Aggressive gratitude is a legacy that Paul left for us all to learn from. Think of it: “Give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thes 5:18). Thanksgiving for Paul was not a once-a-year celebration, but a daily reality that changed his life and made him a joyful person in every situation.

Ingesting life’s difficulties and tragic events can be overwhelming. Having a heart of gratitude, therefore, is not about looking at the bright side of things. It’s not even acknowledging that things could be worse. Our thankfulness is never to be based on a set of circumstances.

    It’s based on a Person.

C.S. Lewis, in one of his letters, says, “We ought to give thanks for all fortune: if it is ‘good,’ because it is good, if ‘bad’ because it works in us patience, humility and the contempt of this world and the hope of our eternal country.” In other words, we don’t have to muster up a false pleasure in bad times, but true gratitude comes from seeing the hand of God working in our lives.

Fertility journey is a freaking rollercoaster and not enough people talk about it.

Its been over two years now… I know… not that long compared to some. But that doesn’t mean my heart isn’t aching any less.

Most days I have peace with the journey,
some days I’m sad and questioning everything.

    Most days I am hopeful,
    some days I just hurt.

Most days I have faith that God’s got this,
some days I doubt His plans.

    Most days I surrender,
some days I try to control everything.

On those “some days” it doesn’t take much for me to start a downward spiral. I start believing all the lies. I am still learning that in our quiet unexpressed un-wrestled through disappointments, Satan handcrafts his most damning weapons against us. It’s his subtle subduction to get us alone with our thoughts so he can slip in whispers that will develop our disappointments into destructive choices. If the enemy can isolate us he can influence us. And his favorite entry point of all is through our disappointments.

It’s in these moments I find myself feeling weak. God has been revealing to me that these weak moments don’t make for weak faith. Weak moments make us even more aware of our need to press into faith. A faith in God that helps us know that what we see isn’t all there is. Weak moments are also clues to what needs to be addressed in this part of the journey.

Today, I am choosing to be vulnerable and not allow Satan to control the narrative. This is my marked moment, a real-life moment where I break the chains of fear, shame, and control.

Oh Dear God, give me faith in my doubt that mountains are still being moved, my giants are still being slain, and wonders are still what you do.

  • Valleys

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:1-4

The other day as I was hiking South Fork Valley, I kept reciting Psalm 23 over and over. You see, it’s a psalm of confidence, a confidence in God’s goodness. That God is good now and God will be good later. It speaks comfort into the most uncomfortable situations we can find ourselves. It provides us with confidence in God’s goodness even when everything else around us seems to be in a wreck.

It’s a psalm designed for the parents whose kid is in rebellion.
It’s a psalm for the soldier who comes back from war dealing with PTSD.
It’s a psalm designed for the couple who month after month are praying and hoping that the pregnancy test will be positive.
It’s a psalm for the spouse who so desperately wants their marriage to be thriving and healthy.
It’s a psalm for the person who feels abandoned by God.
    It’s a psalm for you and I.

Life comes with a lot of valleys. You are always going to find yourself either coming out of a valley, in the midst of a valley, or about to go in a valley. That’s just the way life works.

I find myself wondering a lot, why do we have to go through the valley? Wouldn’t it be a much better life on top of the mountain? That sounds like a better place to live. The air is clear and cold. Simply breathing is exhilarating. Everything is crisp; it’s all fresh, new and exciting. You can see for miles and miles.

While living in Alaska and hiking both the valleys and the mountain tops, I have learned life is not sustained on the mountain top. It’s actually quite hard to live on top of a mountain. The mountain peak might provide a panoramic, stunning view, but life is not sustained on the summit. Life blooms in the valley, and I’ve realized God does some of His greatest work in the valleys of life.

Throughout history, mountains have always invoked a sense of awe, honor, and even mystery in humankind. In every religion, mountains are places of revelation and worship – whether from God of the Bible, the gods, Mother Earth, or one’s inner self. Looking back at Israel’s history (God’s chosen nation) many moments of significance happened on the heights of literal mountains: Mount Ararat where Noah’s ark landed, Mount Moriah where Abraham offered Issac, and Mount Sinai where God revealed Himself to Moses.

When we look at the life of Jesus there is one significant mountain top experience that stands out. Jesus is on a mountain with Peter, James, and John, His most trusted friends, and He is transfigured before them. His appearance changes, his clothes become shining white and He talks with Moses and Elijah, who symbolize the Law and the Prophets. Jesus was momentarily transformed from his human form to his pre-incarnate divine form. Like most of us, Peter wanted to stay and set up camp but Jesus made it clear that they need to go down the mountain. Down to where Jesus would be arrested, where Peter would reject Him, where Jesus would be crucified, and where Peter would return to his previous life as a fisherman before Jesus rose from the grave and reveal himself. This mountain top experience remained with him as a source of assurance, up until his own crucifixion. The contrast between the mountaintop and the valley was enormous.

In order to experience and know God more fully on the mountain top, we have to go through the valley first. Valleys, not just vistas, are places where we see God. The real nourishment, real sustainability, happens in amidst the valley. Herein lies a paradox at the heart of Christianity. Mountaintop experiences help us chart our course, but deep valley experiences help us know God and ourselves most profoundly. When we are broken, helpless, in dark and low places, we come to see in a different way. In the humid, dense, sweltering air, where just breathing seems like so much work. Where you can’t see very far, barely to the next mountain. The confusion and the noise can force us off the path, so we have to follow it from memory, from faith, because we can’t see the end.

It’s in the valley that we see the Good Shepherd cares.

         provides.

         protects.

does some of his greatest work.

         will never leave you.

While walking through my own valley, I reflect on this passage and think, “even though, I walk through the valley of the shadow of death … your rod and your staff, they comfort me”, how does that change the path I’m walking?

I dive deeper into God’s Word, so I am reminded what He says about me. I choose to listen to the truth instead of lies. I build my foundation on God’s Word. I declare with every bone in my being: No matter what I see, I choose faith. No matter what I feel, I choose faith. Even in my doubt, I will lift my hands. I don’t see a way, but with God, there is always a way. I am aching but in my heart, I choose to trust God. I don’t see what I want to see but because of the faithfulness of God, I will choose to walk by faith. I don’t understand this but I believe everything in me my God is still good.

Walking through this valley will make the mountain top all the sweeter. On the mountain top, we praise Him for what He has done, but in the valley, we simply get to praise Him for who He is.
